HOW TO MAKE A Cute Twisted headband in 6 easy steps

I love making headbands. They are quick and easy AND I can use some of the leftover fabric that I have from other projects! But I specially love these twisted headbands because they look great! I will show how I make them in 6 easy steps!

Who loves a cute headband? I know, I do! For me, they are specially great when I am having a bad hair day, we go camping, or I am in a windy open safari vehicle! So, let’s get to it!

First, let’s talk a little bit about sizes. Normally I good size for an adult would be 20 inches long x 8-9 inches wide. I personally prefer 8 inches, I think it’s wide enough but it’s a personal preference.

Now, if you want to be able to customize your headband for any head I would measure around the head (following the invisible line that the headband would follow). Let’s say that the measurement for an adult is 22 inches, then I would substract 2 inches and use that as my length.

If you buy half a yard of fabric I have calculated that you can make 6 headbands (2 for little girls, 2 for teens, and 2 for adults) with the following dimensions:

17 x 7.5 inches (x2 for girls)

19 x 7.5 inches (x2 for teens)

21 x 7.5 inches (x2 for adults)

These measurements will be helpful if you are trying to maxime your fabric for a pop-up or artisan market.

I made this headband in adult size using the measurements provided.

This headband measures 21 x 7.5 inches.

Let’s get to work!

STEP 1: CUT

Cut the fabric. For an adult cut a rectangle of 21 x 7.5 (or 8) inches.

STEP 2: FOLD

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise.

STEP 3: SEW

Sew along the long side of the headband (21 inches side) with a 3/8” seam allowance.

STEP 4: TURN INSIDE OUT

Turn the headband inside out all the way!

STEP 5: FOLD (Make sure you watch the video below)

For this step you are going lay the headband flat with the seam side up and in the middle. Then, you are going to fold it in half with one of the edges in the middle as shown in the photo.

Now, you are going to fold over the two flaps: one on top and one underneath. Hold it in place because this is the part we are going to sew in the next step.

Make sure to watch the video below for detailed steps!

In this video I am going to walk you through how to fold the headband so it’s twisted.

STEP 6: SEW

Now, you are going to sew a CURVED line to close the open edge of the headband. Make sure you do a back and forth stitch at the beginning and at the end.

You are done! Open up the headband. The seam will be covered.

ALL DONE!

Congratulations, you made it! You can add your tags if you’d like at the end.
